Malangen offers an almost unlimited number of hikes. While there are 10 officially registered hiking trails (see on the map), a lot of Malangen's terrain is open for free roaming and hiking. The registered hikes are available in Norwegian on TurTell.no (link below) and in English on our own ExploreMalangen interactive map (link below).

Mortenhalsskolten

Length: 6km - Height: 767m - Difficulty: 4/5.
Follow FV 7892 from Mestervik to Mortenhals (16 km) and turn off at the junction at Malangen church. Follow Sandselvveien straight ahead up to Fjellbygda. After 3 km there is another junction; drive straight to the end of the road at the farm Einan. Good parking at the turning area. Map/information board.

Grønnlihaugen

Length: 1.8km - Height: 370m - Difficulty: 2/5.
Follow FV 7892 from Mestervik to Mortenhals (16 km) and turn off at the junction at Malangen church. Follow Sandselvveien straight ahead for approx. 800 m. Exit/park on the left immediately after the ferry.

Fiskefjellet

Length: 5.5km - Height: 828m - Difficulty: 4/5.
Follow FV 7892 from Mestervik to Mortenhals (16 km) and turn off at the junction at Malangen church. Follow Sandselvveien straight ahead up to Fjellbygda. After 3 km there is another junction; drive straight to the end of the road at the farm Einan. Good parking at the turning area. Map/information board.

Fjellbrua

Length: 0.9km - Height: 100m - Difficulty: 1/5.
Follow FV 7892 from Mestervik to Sand (15 km), turn right towards Skutvikvatnet. Follow FV 7896 to the next junction (almost 4 km). Turn left, drive straight to the end of the road, approx. 1.5 km. Good parking space. Map/information board at the starting point.

Kvannfjellet

Length: 5 km - Height: 1013m - Difficulty: 5/5.
In Fjellskardalen, about 6 kilometers from the junction in Skutvik. Parking space on the right approx. 1.6 km from the crossing to Fjellskardalen (0.5 km before the turning point), before the river with a sketch map and signs.

Alternatively, Fjellbygdavegen to the Fjellskardalen junction from Malangseidet (7.2 km) or Sand (6.6 km).
Alternatively (winter) at the turning point at the end of the road, well out of the way of the plow vehicle.

Blåruttinden

Length: 3.5 km - Height: 806m - Difficulty: 4/5.
Follow FV 7892 from Mestervik to Ansnes, 30 km. The starting point is just past the last house (no. 3884, on the downhill side of the road) and before the 60 zone ends. It is signposted but easy to miss. Parking where the tractor road enters the forest. (If you come from the Tromsø side, it is approx. 18 km from the Ryatunnel.)

Harehaugen

Length: 2 km - Height: 250m - Difficulty: 2/5.
From Mestervik; turn right at the junction towards Tromsø, after about 16 km (at Kvitnes) you come to a small river, drive over the bridge to the parking lot on the left side of the road.

Haugafjellet

Length: 5.1 km - Height: 835m - Difficulty: 4/5.
From the junction at Mestervik, you drive towards Tromsø for about 2.5 km. At the last bend before the top of Eidbakken, there is a turn-off on the right (note that it is a bit difficult to access) by a tractor road and parking for several cars.

In addition to free sea fishing (all year), Malangen harbors a series of fresh water lakes and rivers in which it is allowed to fish the year round with a mandatory fishing permit (inatur). Please use our ExploreMalangen interactive map to find designated fishing places in English (link below).

Sandsvannet

Beautiful lake located 2 kilometers from Sand. It is very accessible from the road with several parking places. It has a public hut where you can grill and make a fire.

Fish found: Trout, perch, Arctic char

Skutvikvannet

Skutvikvannet is the largest and deepest lake in Malangen. It is accessible by road on the north and east side. The west and south side can be accessed by walking around from the north side or by Skutvikfossen.

Nikkavannet

Nikkavannet is a dark-water lake perched on a hill and surrounded by beautiful pine forest. The lake is accessible by a path that runs all around it.

Fish found: Trout, Arctic char

Nordbyvannet

Nordbyvannet is one of the biggest lakes in Malangen and is found at the southeast of the peninsula.

Fish found: Trout

Sandselva & Sandselvfossen

River and waterfall (secret pool) where sea trout, trout and salmon fray. Strict rules apply for fishing in the river and the pool. Please visit our map or iNatur to see the rules.
